The Art of the Image | About

When does a talent become a passion?  For Nathan Dean, the transition came when he could devote himself to photography as strongly as he had previously devoted himself to a distinguished academic career. Born in Tennessee and educated in Cambridge, England, he has traveled the world, visiting and photographing in more than seventy countries.  His art seeks simplicity and coherence in the same way his science did, emphasizing the essential and eliminating the inessential.  His studies of faces, shot on the street, reach into the subject’s inner being to celebrate humanity and soul and ask the viewer to imagine becoming another person.  Guided by Einstein’s rule that “everything should be as simple as possible, but no simpler,” his taut and elegant compositions have won awards and have been exhibited in numerous juried shows in New York, Paris, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and elsewhere.  His recent one-man show at Atlanta’s prestigious Restaurant Eugene was highly successful, and his works have been published in both the Portfolio and the Single Shot editions of the highly regarded photography journal Black and White.
